What is the Avenue for the Arts?


The Avenue for the Arts is a neighborhood title for the South Division commercial corridor between Fulton and Wealthy streets. We are residential, commercial and nonprofit groups working together in a creative community. We are residents in Heartside, and active participants in shaping change in our neighborhood. In 2005, we choose the Avenue for the Arts as a title to represent our commercial corridor and the projects and events that we create.


How is the Avenue for the Arts supported?

The Avenue for the Arts programing is supported by Dwelling Place,   a nonprofit community development corporation, located in the Heartside Neighborhood. A staff person from the Dwelling Place Neighborhood Revitalization department is provided to raise funds, manage promotions, facilitate events and support both the Learning Lab and the Avenue for the Arts Advisory Committee. What is the Learning Lab?

Screen Shot 2015-07-17 at 10.48.53 AMEach season the Avenue for the Arts programing is coordinated by a new dedicated group of interns and volunteers. Over the course of a year 12+ current and recent college graduates and local artists will participate in a Dwelling Place internship though the Avenue for the Arts Learning Lab. Learning Lab participants do the work of making Avenue for the Arts programing go!


What is the Advisory Committee?

The Avenue for the Arts Advisory Committee shapes the vision, events and activities centered on the Avenue for the Arts. The committee, comprised of business owners, residents and volunteers, provides a forum for the community, to share and discuss innovation and events past and present. Passionate about art and community, committee members attend monthly meetings and develop new ways to engage our neighbors and artists. Advisory committee meetings are open for anyone to attend and take place the Second Wednesday of the month.


Does the Avenue for the Arts programing have a walk-in location?16553432514_aec31c346c_k

Yes! The Avenue for the Arts [Work] Space is located at 307 South Division. There are open, walk in hours every Friday from 10am until 2pm and the site is open during all First Friday events.



How do artists show their work along the Avenue for the Arts?

There are a few opportunities to show your work along the Avenue!

  2. Become a member and sign up to vend during our First Friday events in June and August
  3. Attend a planning meeting in January 2016 to find out how to participate in Art.Downtown.


What does the Avenue for the Arts bring to downtown Grand Rapids?

Avenue for the Arts creates opportunities in downtown Grand Rapids that are unique including:

  • Engaging Heartside residents through art and building a sense of community
  • Providing venues and opportunities for students and practicing artists to exhibit their work and build their portfolio
  • Hosting events such as the Break it Down Education Series and OPEN small group events, that benefit artist by building relationships between peers while engaging the creative community in successfully creating and promoting work in West Michigan.
  • Creating events that allow visitors to connect to the art community while exploring downtown

Why does the Avenue for the Arts have a membership program?

In 2013 the Avenue for the Arts launched a membership program for artists and community members. Membership benefits include:

  • Waived application fees for The Market, Art.Downtown. and vending events.
  • Receive reduced or free entry to Avenue for the Arts Break it Down. Education Events.
  • Become enrolled in our monthly newsletter and keep up-to-date about the Avenue events, opportunities and happenings.

  • Meet other creatives at Open events,  Artist Appreciation Parties or our After Party events.
  • Avenue for the Arts Members are promoted first, included on Avenue event promotions, website and are featured in our newsletter. We champion members on social media and offer resources to help members get recognized.
  • Each year we give away fresh Avenue for the Arts swag to members
  • Membership fees support everything we do. That’s right, YOUR support makes all of this possible.
