What is the Learning Lab?

In 2015, we reached our 73rd Learning Lab internship!
Learning Lab internship positions are intended to provide individuals interested in art, community and building their nonprofit or communications related skills. The program creates options and opportunities to engage, develop and take ownership over projects and creative proposals. We are looking for individuals who want to engage, collaborate and grow creative projects.

Ideal candidates will have an interest in art, community, social justice, marketing and/or community organizing. Candidates will be looking to expand knowledge and apply skills in: practical writing, design, event planning, volunteer and member management, social work, journalism, and other fields.

Open Positions

Event Coordinator  (2) As an Avenue for the Arts Event Coordinator you will overseeing the Art.Downtown. OR First Fridays event series. Events coordinators work alongside business owners, arts organizations and artists to create engaging events that attract 1,000s of guests to downtown Grand Rapids.This position is for someone interested in big picture thinking, but focused on relationship building, details and hands-on experience. Must be available Friday day and night OR the April Art.Downtown. Date. *

Community Outreach Coordinator As the Community Outreach Coordinator you will focus on promoting and building special projects and general outreach programs including management and visioning for OPEN programing which takes place the third Thursday of each month from 7-9pm. This position is great for artists and community minded individuals looking to meet new faces in GR. Must be available Thursday Nights and Friday during the day.

Education Coordinator This position is great for creatives interested in challenging the creative community with conversation while investigating practical business knowledge. Managing the Break it Down. event series includes a one day event in February and the Doing Business class which takes place on Tuesday Nights seasonally (attendance is required) this person will work in a highly collaborative work environment alongside leadership from the UICA and ArtPrize. Must be available some daytime hours, Tuesday Nights, Friday during the day and occasional special event dates in the evening. Find out more about our Break it Down. Series.

Promotions Coordinator Hands on skill building around promotions for the Avenue for the Arts including writing press releases, social media management, gorilla marketing techniques, building a written promotions portfolio and This position is for someone interested in gaining experience in marketing with transferable skills useful in working for an organization or for a small business. Must be available Friday day and night as well as some special events.

In addition we are also accepting Project Plan Submissions.

* One event coordinator position oversees First Friday Programing, another oversees Art.Downtown.(winter) or the market (Summer)


The Dwelling Place hosts a variety of internships and volunteer positions dedicated to supporting the Avenue for the Arts. Seasonally 4-7 positions are filled seasonally to support events and community organizing activities.

Positions begin in September, January and May.
